Replacement Windows and Front Door
During Spring 2021 saw the replacement of ten uPVC windows and front door to a Colt bungalow in Rochester. The windows were factory fitted in our bespoke hand machined Colt sub-frames in our workshop for a direct replacement on site.
The composite door is set into a uPVC frame, finished with cedar trims – all resulting in an amazing completion!
New Rudgwick Roof
The men spent two separate weeks working away in Rudgwick, West Sussex to undertake re-shingling both elevations of the roof on this Colt bungalow. They managed to luckily dodge the rain and work long days to get the job done!
New shingles and roof care
One hot and sunny week in June saw Martin and Nick re-shingle part of this shallow expansive roof in Sevenoaks with new cedar wood shingles, in addition to treating the whole roof with Texnap 22 oil.
Re-shingled Gable End
Western Red cedar shingles replaced the old cedar shingles on the gable end of this Colt bungalow in Rochester, finished with one coat of Texnap 22 oil.
New Shingles Before the Snow!
The front elevation of this garage was renewed using Western Red cedar shingles. Luckily, the men finished the job just in time before the snow fell!
This garage was originally constructed in 1936 and is the third cedar shingle roof covering since this time!
From Old Shingles to New Cedar Boarding
Cedar wood shingles and cedar cladding have graced and enriched the beauty of many Colt homes over the last 100 years. With several cedar profile options available; our clients were in search of a more modern look for their home and opted for a mix of horizontal shiplap cedar boarding and vertical o-gee profile within the recessed porch area. Together with new cedar trims around the dormer window and the cleaning of the uPVC gutters, upon applying Texnap 22 nourishing oil to the finished cedar, the front of the house is now set for another 60 years of life!
An Autumn Trip to Scotland – Part Two!
With only a few short months remaining of 2020 and the thought of winter around the corner, our final trip to Scotland went ahead and the team completed the installation of the outstanding A rated uPVC windows and set of uPVC French doors.
Having completed the trip to Cupar near Perth three times this autumn and all in-between the Scottish lockdowns, we were also lucky enough to have the time to retro-fit some much needed insulation on the southern elevation, complementing this wall with new cedar wood shingles.
Our contract in Cupar this Autumn was to install fifteen white uPVC frames, factory fitted in our unique sub-frame system, along with one set of open-out uPVC French doors. Utilising our lockdown time here in Kent, we were able to have the uPVC windows and sub-frames put together in our workshop, finishing the exterior treated timber section with three coats of Super-dec Sadolin wood stain and white satin wood paint applied to the inside section, rendering the frames complete and ready for a easy direct replacement.
Together, with an insulated much warmer southern elevation and beautifully fixed cedar wood shingles, the bungalow and our client are all set for a warmer cosier winter.
When Only Cedar Will Do!
Choosing the right materials for the right job can be a tricky one for most people, but our clients here in Kent already knew the only choice for their new garage had to be cedar.
Due to the position of the garage being at the front of the house, full Planning Approval was required and approved, then work began. No Building Regs were required due the size, less than 18sqm.
Pre-manufactured in our workshop in Woodchurch, the garage was fabricated, delivered to site and erected soon after. Despite the rain during the erecting, the garage was completed in four weeks, including manufacture.
Beautiful horizontal cedar boarding wraps the building on all four sides, whilst the rain is kept out by the many Western Red cedar wood shingles on the roof.
Together with a fantastic looking cedar up-and-over door (adloruk.com) and cedar personnel door to the side, the marriage of all the materials was definitely our client’s right choice and truly works!
An Autumn trip to Scotland!
September 2020 saw our team embark on the long trip to Scotland to add some much-needed insulation to a remote bungalow built in 1972, in Cupar, near Perth.
Having left very early on the first day and residing locally during the remainder of that week, enabled the men to achieve a much needed 12-hour day to get the job done!
With the journey time to Cupar completed in just under ten hours, there was still enough time to embark on setting up and commencing on the difficult access elevation on the bungalow due to the many plants and shrubs.
After removing the many redundant cedar wood shingles, fixing battens and fibre/insulation board from the wall, fibre-glass quilt was then used to snuggly fill the narrow wall void. The carefully removed existing insulation/fibre board was then fixed back in place, in addition to a further layer of 25mm Celotex insulation. A breather house-wrap membrane and battens were fixed to the walls and the new cedar wood shingles were fixed in place and dressed with Texnap 22 nourishing oil on completion.
The western gable end and a small section on the southerly side was completed all in one week. Work will resume in five weeks and in seven weeks’ time when the team return to commence on the installation of sixteen new windows and further thermal insulation improvements. Watch this space!
Stunning Front Extension in Hampshire
To mark the end of lockdown, July, 2020 and eager to get to back to normal, our team enthusiastically manufactured, delivered and erected this stunning living room extension with a covered porch area, near Hook in Hampshire.
Planning Permission and Building Regulation approval was applied for by Colts and work began on removing the porch earlier in February. Disaster struck when we then had the unfortunate government instruction to postpone work and wait until the restrictions were lifted before we could resume normal duties and crack on in July!
With only two weeks workshop time required to manufacture the components and five weeks on site to erect, we were proud to hand over the much needed extra space. The extension measures four metres by four metres and boasts a vaulted ceiling with a good size Velux window.
Together, with a 1.5 metre wide covered porch area, this is something our Hampshire clients intend to sit under on rainy days and enjoy the glorious sunsets!
Once again, we are proud to showcase the diversity of Western Red cedarwood shingles and beautifully installed horizontal cedar, enhanced with a modern front door and subtle Rosewood uPVC angled windows in the gable.
This fine example of our work ticked all the criteria boxes presented to us last year. Well done the Colt team!
