New Garden Annexe
With garden rooms and the need for extra living space continuing to rise, this generous garden annexe perfectly fits the bill and now takes pride of place in the beautiful garden of a Colt bungalow near Chatham, Kent.
The brief was to create a luxury home for a retired relative, with low thresholds for easy access and sleek internal sliding pocket doors to maximise space. Full planning approval was obtained and the build was carried out under building regulations, with inspections at every stage.
With an internal floor space of approximately 40 sqm and an additional 12 sqm provided by the external roof overhang, this annexe rivals many small retirement bungalows for both comfort and practicality. The open-plan living area features a fully equipped kitchen with premium NEFF appliances and a generous built-in cupboard to house the fridge freezer, with extra rooms for coats, cleaning equipment and other essentials. This clever layout leaves plenty of space for relaxing, cooking and entertaining.
Double doors open onto a level, paved terrace, while two further side windows ensure uninterrupted garden views and an abundance of natural light. At the rear, instead of a traditional window, an atrium roof lantern was installed, flooding the interior with daylight and adding architectural interest.
A wide sliding oak pocket door leads to the bedroom – a stylish space-saving alternative to a hinged door, freeing up space for furniture, while enhancing the home’s modern feel. The bedroom itself is compact, but bright, with a double-aspect window and its own private external door.
Another sliding pocket door opens into the shower rooms, where thoughtful design ensures both comfort and accessibility. An almost flush shower tray, grab rails and a built-in seat provides ease of use, while a sleek vanity unit and toilet complete the space.
The annexe is decorated to a high standard, with fixtures and finishes chosen to our client’s exact specifications. Externally, Western Red cedar clads the covered veranda, while the sides and rear are finished with chestnut painted feather edge boarding. The result is a warm, inviting and functional home that blends beautifully into it’s surroundings.
We were proud to hand this delightful garden annexe over – an elegant, comfortable and practical home for years to come!
