We had two visits from the illustrious Colt team in 2023 – early October and early December. Martin, Nik and Alex arrived late afternoon after a 9 hour trip from deepest Kent to the heart of Scotland. After a quick introduction to Alex and without even unpacking they were underway replacing a few misted windows and preparing for the main job. Then at 8.00pm we were all round the table for a family tea, a good old chat, a few beers and a glass of malt to round off the evening. Up at 7.00 on the next day and onto the job of removing the panelling from the front of the house as it had worn thin over the 55 years. Stopping only for a full-blown Scottish breakfast at 10.30 it was full steam ahead and another 7.30 finish and 8.00 pm meal, non-stop chatting, lubricated with another beer and a malt or two. Up sharp again on the Wednesday to start adding solid insulation, extended by an inch along the whole front and fully sealed and watertight. Thursday saw a repeat of the 12.5 hour working day and the new cedar wood facing board fully back on and even oiled. Even persistent showers failed to hinder progress, with the front of the house fortunately on the leeward side. Job done and a pristine & highly accomplished finish! A grand farewell meal and the usual lubricants saw them homeward bound at 6am on the Friday.
Perhaps it was the encouragement of Shona’s food and comfy beds here, but we were promised another visit only two months later! Mid-afternoon on in early December saw the Colt boys embark on creating an ensuite out of a bathroom for the main bedroom. The job entailed blocking off a door, creating a new door and moving a door, insulating all the external walls and increasing the depth of it, re-plaster boarding, taping & filling and plastering the walls, then putting on the facings and skirtings. Liaising with our plumber Mark and electrician James was essential. As on the previous visit, all this was done in the space of 3 long days.
